Steering System
Steering is probably one of the most important systems in your vehicle. You always want to be sure that when you turn the steering wheel of your cars its wheels will follow.
Most people think that the steering system is pretty simple and its functioning is very easy to understand. But in fact it is not so - modem steering systems are very complex and advanced mechanisms. Probably you did not even think of it but when you make a turn the inner wheel of your vehicle is making tighter turn than the outer wheel. And this function is performed by the steering system of your car. But it's not the only function of the steering systems - in most cases these days it also lessens the effort you need to make a turn (this mechanical advantage is achieved trough the special system).
In modern cars you can find two major types of steering gears - they are called rack-and-pinion and recirculating ball.
But most common and probably one of the most widely used types of steering systems today is rack-and-pinion steering. The system consists of a metal tube and a special rack-and-pinion gearset is installed in it. Each end of this special rack comes out from this tube. A tie rod connects to each end of the rack. The steering shaft has the pinion gear attached to it. When you turn the steering wheel, the gear spins and moves the rack. There is a tie rod connected to each end of the rack. The main function of this rod is to connect the rack to the steering arm on the spindle. Some vehicles have variable-ratio steering. A rack-and-pinion gearset which has a different from the outside tooth pitch is used in it. Such system allows the vehicle to respond faster at the start of a turn (the rack is near the center). But it also reduces efforts near turning limits of wheel.
Talking about steering systems people use different names like as rack and pinion, rack and pinion assemblies, rack and pinion units or gearbox.
