Car Batteries
The battery in your car is a source of energy for all the electrical components that your vehicle has. Many people think that car battery is only needed to start the car but that is only a misconception. Of course providing energy to the starter (and ignition) is one of the main functions of the battery but all the other electrical equipment relies on the battery.
Sometimes electrical requirements of your car exceed the power that charging system provides. In that case battery also comes into use. For example to power the stereo when the engine is not running your vehicle battery is used.
But the battery is also works as a stabilizer for the entire electrical system in your vehicle. There are many different cases when higher voltage that can easily damage and even ruin electrical components appears in the electrical system. Your car's battery reduces (and also smoothes) this higher voltage and thus protects solid components of electrical system from possible damage.
Your vehicle battery is simply a chemical element that produces the voltage. This means that the battery has so called sulfating (it is a sort of chemical reaction inside the battery). And sulfating of your car's battery increases each time the battery is used. Sulfated battery can not provide enough energy for the electrical system of your car. This means that all the solid electrical components in your auto start to receive power from the alternator. As it was already mentioned such situation can lead to the damage of some components.
So it is pretty obvious that to achieve optimal performance and avoid possible damage of electrical system components you need to maintain your battery in a good condition. It is highly recommended to check your battery once a month (also always check its conditions before the winter).
Following procedures are needed to ensure a good conation of the battery:
- Checking off the alternator belt tension (also check the wear of the belt)
- Tightening loose hold-down clamps and terminals
- Checking of electrolyte level
It is also important to remove the corrosion.
Charging the battery is not that hard so you can perform it yourself and save some money. The only thing you need for that is a charger. And of course you can always bring your car to the service to check your car's battery and charge it is necessary.
